Training Process
Ongoing Training Process Needs Improvement
Training new words after the initial enrollment session was generally
effective. And periodically, the program would announce that it
would like to analyze some of your recent speech in order to improve
itself. Also if it detected that you were having trouble with
certain words, it would ask you to train them individually, a
nice touch.
But there were the occasional rough spots. For example, the recognizer
had trouble with the company name "3Com" hearing it
as "three," on first utterance. Training that name proved
exceptionally difficult because the program would consistently
throw away the "3" leaving us only with the "com"
part to be taken as the correct spelling.
There is a recognition wizard invocable from the main menu which
is supposed to help train words that are not properly understood.
After such individual word training, the wizard asks you to test
the result but doesn't quite tell you how to do that testing.
We guessed that you were simply supposed to ignore the, as yet,
still open test request dialog window and bring to the foreground
the text you were working on.
But when you do that, nothing happens when you try out the new
phrase. That's because the training procedure turned off the microphone
behind your back and didn't restore it for you when it asked you
to do the test. After you then turn on the mike, try out the new
phrase and go back to the training dialog, if you indicate failure
of recognition, you're put in a loop of training that is a problem
to exit from. Our testers found the training procedure for individual
words extremely cumbersome and wished for a simple pop-up box
initiated by a right click on the offending word - a solution
some of the other products have.
