Integration with Other Applications
Integration Needs Improvement
FreeSpeech 2000 does not work well with Instant Messenger. No
correction alternatives appear in the correction window, keyed
corrections collide with other characters, and every send operation
causes it to bounce out of dictation mode.
Dictation into Dreamweaver works, but the voice playback function
didn't work properly with insertions in previously dictated text.
The correction window does not show alternatives in Dreamweaver.
The program works with English Wizard, but the constant need
to stop and start dictation mode for each query makes the process
cumbersome. In addition, dollar amounts dictated in English Wizard
queries are not formatted completely in numeric figures, causing
English Wizard to generate a syntax error.
Very Weak Macro Capability
The Philips voice macro facility divides macros into three types—word
substitutions, keyboard/mouse sequence playback, and program initiation—with
separate wizards that cannot be combined. Because our test requires
all three types to exist in one macro, building the e-mail macro
is impossible. Dictation directly into Netscape mail may be done,
but the voice operated correction facilities do not work properly.
Voice playback was erratic when insertions and additions were
made.
Miluti-Lingual Recognition and SDK Included at No Charge
Unlike the other vendors, Philips FreeSpeech 2000 comes with
an SDK as part of the shrinkwrap package. There is a useful online
tutorial and many good sample programs. The SDK is Microsoft SAPI
4.0-compliant. Dictated speech recognition in UK English, German,
French, Spanish and Italian are also included in the package.
